About Figen Murray OBE
Figen Murray OBE is a counter terrorism expert and a beacon of hope and resilience.
As the pioneering force behind Martyn's Law, the world's first-of-its-kind counter terrorism legislation, officially known as the Terrorism (Protection of Premises) Act 2025, Figen has redefined safety and security standards in the UK by ensuring public venues will be proactively prepared to protect people in the event of a terror attack.
Figen's son, Martyn Hett, was one of 22 innocent victims killed at the Manchester Arena terror attack on 22 May 2017. She channeled her grief into transformative action and has emerged as a leading advocate for better security provision and standards across the UK.
With a master's in counter terrorism from the University of Central Lancashire and an Honorary Degree from Salford University, Figen's academic achievements bolster her real world impact.
She inspires change and embodies courage, and Figen Murray was recognised with an OBE in the 2022 New Years Honours for her work in counter terrorism.
Pride of Britain awards: "I'm thinking about who killed Martyn and I want to do what's humanely the right thing. I'm going tomorrow morning on national TV and I will publicly forgive the terrorist that killed Martyn. It's something I need to do and I strongly believe it."
Ed Balls, ITV Good Morning Britain anchor - "there'll be so many of our viewers who are willing you on every step of the way and very moved that you are doing this for other people, so that you can change things for the future."
